Bill Rodgers (athlete)
Bill Rodgers (actually William Henry Rodgers, born December 23, 1947 in Hartford, Connecticut ) is a former American long-distance runner, who scored extraordinary success in the marathon from the mid 1970s to the early 1980s ^.
He won the 1975 Boston Marathon and ran it as the first U.S. runner for a time under 2:10. 1978, 1979 and 1980, he was able to repeat this victory, in 1979 with a new U.S. record time and his personal record of 2:09:27. 1976 to 1979, he won four times in a row the New York City Marathon in 1977 in addition to the Fukuoka Marathon.
In a marathon, the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, he was handicapped by an injury and was ranked 40th for the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, he was a big favorite until the boycott these Games by the United States thwarted his participation.
With 28 marathons he remained under 2:15 - only the Ethiopian Abebe Mekonnen was able to offer this brand more often.
