Bilma is a department in the Agadez Region in Niger.

Geography

The Department is located in the northeast of the country on the border with Algeria, Libya and Chad. It consists of the township Bilma and the rural communities Dirkou, Djado and Fachi. The eponymous capital of the department is Bilma. The Department Bilma forms in elections to the National Assembly one of the nation's eight special constituencies. While the regular constituencies in each of which a certain number of deputies is elected, the remainder correspond to the eight regions of Niger, the voters of Special constituencies choose each have their own deputies.

History

The Department Bilma goes back in history to the 1907 created Bilma circle ( cercle de Bilma ) in the French military territory of Niger. After independence in 1960, Niger's territory into 32 districts ( circonscriptions ) was divided. One of them was the district Bilma. 1964 was divided into seven administrative reform Niger departments, the predecessor of the later regions, and 32 arrondissements, the predecessor of the later departments. As part of the district Bilma was converted to the district Bilma. In 1998, the former arrondissements of Niger in departments were converted, each headed by an appointed Council of Ministers is prefect. The structure of the department in communities exists since the year 2002. Previously, it consisted of the urban center and the cantons Bilma Bilma, Djado, Fachi and Kawar. The 2013 appointed prefect of Bilma is Soumana Sirfi Wonkoye.

Population

The Department has Bilma 2012 17.459 inhabitants according to the census. At the 2001 census, there were 17,080 inhabitants in the census in 1988 and 8454 residents in the census in 1977 7409 inhabitants.
