Biosphäre Potsdam

The Biosphere Potsdam is a tropical house in the town of Potsdam. The building of the biosphere is in the public park in Potsdam, a newer park between Sanssouci Park and the new garden. The former military site was redeveloped specifically for the Federal Garden Show 2001. The design for the building dates from the Berlin architects Barkow Leibinger.

The building houses approximately 20,000 tropical plants with about 350 different species and tropical animals ( including lizards, snakes, spiders, frogs, praying mantises, freewheeling geckos and pheasants ). On several levels the soil, water and air are used as elements of design. The biosphere is clearly different from classical botanical gardens through a concept than pure nature or venue with varying special topics related to the nature. Financing

The biosphere is operated by the Municipal Pro Potsdam and had to be subsidized with EUR 1.7 million each from the city of Potsdam in 2010 and 2011, before the grants were in some cases even higher.
