Biotren

Route network of Biotrén

The Biotrén is the S -Bahn in the metropolitan area of the Chilean city of Concepción.

It is operated by the company Ferrocarriles Suburbanos de Concepción ( FESUB ). This company also operates passenger services from Victoria to Temuco. It was founded in 1995 as part of the reform of the Chilean state-owned railway company EFE. The first Biotrén system was put into operation in 1999. A renewal learned about it in 2005. The stations have been fully renovated and equipped with platform roofs and barrier-free access. The vehicles were purchased by the Spanish RENFE.

The Biotrén operates on two lines. The first line connects the cities of Talcahuano, Concepción, Chiguayante and Hualqui. The second line goes from Concepción to the other side of the river Biobío after Lomas Coloradas. The trains leave in the morning and in the afternoon every hour. In April 2008, the offer in the off-peak periods was stopped for financial reasons. Some trains go even further to La Laja, where the north-south route of the Chilean railway network is achieved.
