Bird Island (North Carolina)

Bird Iceland is an undeveloped barrier island on the southwestern edge of the North Carolina coast. It is located between Sunset Beach and Little River Inlet. The nature reserve covers 1681 hectares, consisting of approximately 135 acres of upland and 1,300 acres of marsh surface. By 2002 the island was privately owned and was purchased with the help of donations and public funds from the State of North Carolina and put under protection. This habitat is managed by the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management.
