Geography

Birkenfeld is located in Enztal in 260-352 meters altitude, about seven kilometers from Pforzheim.

Community structure

The municipality includes the former community Birkenfeld Gräfenhausen. To the municipality of Birkenfeld, in the borders of before the municipal reform in the 1970s include the village of Birkenfeld and the houses breakpoint Angel Fire. For the former municipality Gräfenhausen includes the villages Gräfenhausen and Oberhausen, which have grown together.

History

The first documented by grave finds Birkenfeld settlement dates back to the year 400 BC. The former settlers were Celts. Around the year 100 AD, the region belonged to the Roman dominion Birkenfeld. During this time a Roman estate was built. From the year 500 Birkenfeld was continuously inhabited by Alemanni and Franks later.

Birkenfeld was first mentioned in documents in 1302. Since 1322 Birkenfeld belonged to Württemberg. That same year, the first time the existence of a mill was documented. The first school in town was built in 1566. In the Thirty Years' War Birkenfeld was not destroyed, but was pillaged several times. 1856 opened the first industrial unit, a branch factory of Sense factory Neuenbürg. With the opening of Enztalbahn in 1886 and the station Birkenfeld the community was traffic- connected to Pforzheim.

On January 1, 1972, the community was incorporated into Gräfenhausen Birkenfeld.

Religion

Birkenfeld to 1490 belonged to the parish Brötzingen. In Birkenfeld there was an old Lady Chapel, which was replaced in 1490 with the elevation of the site to an independent parish by a larger church. Based on the affiliation of Württemberg, the town was reformed in 1534 and remained purely Protestant until the 19th century. 1828 a new church was built. After it was burned down in 1875, today's Evangelical church was built on its foundations.

The Catholics of the place were initially powered by the parish Wildbad of Neuenbürg from where in 1958 finally own Catholic parish was founded. 1960, the Birkenfelder Catholics built the Church of St. Clare.

Since 1967 is a United Methodist church in town, the 1970/71 built the Christ Church.

Gräfenhausen

Gräfenhausen is older than Birkenfeld. Already in 1100 it had its own church. Originally straub hard table, the place came in 1422 under the reign of Württemberg. In the early 1970s Gräfenhausen was amalgamated with Oberhausen to Birkenfeld.

Oberhausen

Oberhausen is the smallest district of the municipality Birkenfeld. In Oberhausen, there is a fist ball court and a historic, well preserved wine.

Mayor

The oldest evidence of a mayor in Birkenfeld comes from the Holy bill of 1395, in which a mayor Hans is mentioned as the founder of a morning mass. Since 1705, the mayor of the village are completely known. With Ernst Neuhaus wore in 1929 for the first time a mayor Birkenfelder the official title of mayor.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms, which leads the congregation Birkenfeld since December 27, 1979, formed from parts of the coat of arms of the autonomous communities before Birkenfeld and Gräfenhausen. The three acorns today are symbolic of the three districts Birkenfeld, Gräfenhausen and Oberhausen.

The certificate for the award is described as follows: Under blue shield head, wherein a continuous, four-membered gold chain beheftet with a square set at an angle, golden bordierten red gem, in a Gold zweiblättriger green oak branch with three green acorns.

In the arms of the formerly independent municipality Birkenfeld a staged on the tip Rubin points out the importance of the jewelry industry. The plow shown symbolizing the importance of agriculture was still important. The coat of arms of the formerly independent municipality Gräfenhausen depicts three acorns. On the significance is not known.

Economy and infrastructure

The main industry is the jewelry and watch industry. In addition, the metalworking and processing, electronics and Präzisionswerkzeugebau and the electroplating industry has been established. In the community, there are currently three commercial areas: the industrial area Upper Enztal, the industrial area north and the industrial area in the district of West Gräfenhausen. The inter-municipal industrial park Dammfeld created - Furthermore, at the time - along with the community. The company STRATEC Biomedical is headquartered in Birkenfeld.

Traffic

Since 1868 Birkenfeld is the Enztalbahn ( Pforzheim - Bad Wildbad ) is connected and hence to the rail network. Public transport on this route is organized by Transport Association Pforzheim- Enz. There are also numerous bus routes which travel from Pforzheim by the community. Culture and sights

Culture

Since 1981 find at the event series Music from Dresden encounters with artists from Saxony instead.   • The Old Town Hall in Birkenfeld is a timber-framed building dating back to 1584. Plans for a new town hall existed since 1871. As one 1890 built a new school house, changed the management in the Built in 1866 Old School House, which still serves as the town hall.
  • The Protestant Church of 1875/76 was extensively renovated in 1955. The church received a Walcker organ, which replaced an older instrument of the same organ workshop. Because of its location on the northern Black Forest Birkenfeld is the starting point for hikes and mountain bike tours. Birkenfeld is located at the beginning of the West route from Pforzheim to Basel and thus in the European long-distance path E1.
