History

Emil Birkhäuser (1850-1930) was born in Thuringia; he came as a young typesetter to Switzerland and founded in 1879 in Basel own small print shop, which later developed the publisher. 1985 Birkhauser Verlag was sold to the Springer -Verlag, the printing went to the Basler Zeitung Medien, they merged in 1990 with the Graphical Works Coop Birkhäuser GBC AG. In 1998, Springer, the architecture program of Artemis and integrated it into the Birkhäuser Verlag. In 2002, the design magazine was taken over form. The end of 2009 Springer sold the field of architecture and design at the Spanish Architecture Publisher Actar (Barcelona) (new name: Group ActarBirkhäuser ).
