The Birmingham Airport (IATA: BHX, ICAO: EGBB ) is the international commercial airport in the UK's second largest city Birmingham and the fifth largest in the country.

History

Construction of the airport dates back to a City Council decision of 1928; but the opening was not until 1939. During World War II, the start and runways were paved. From 1967, a scheduled service with the Vickers VC10 began to New York.

1984, a new terminal building was opened to the east of the runway, a second terminal was added on 26 July 1991. In 2008, the shorter of the two runways was closed. 2009, a new terminal was opened as part of International Pier. By 2013, the runway is to be extended to 3,000 meters.

The airport is located 13 km east of the city on the floor of the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull, West Midlands region. He is surrounded by the National Exhibition Centre in the east, the village of Bickenhill in the South, West and Sheldon in Marston Green in the north.

The only long-haul routes currently lead to Newark ( United Airlines ), Toronto ( Air Transat ), Dubai (Emirates ), Delhi ( Air India ), Amritsar ( Air India ), Ashgabat (Turkmenistan Airlines) and Islamabad ( PIA).
