Bismarck Tower (Metz)

The Bismarck Tower Metz is an observation tower that was built in honor of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck 1901/1902. It is located in Lorraine in northeastern France. He is one of around 240 Bismarck towers that emerged during this period.

History

After the death of Bismarck in 1898 there were in the German Empire a broad movement that had built monuments to the former Chancellor. Also in Metz, then part of the kingdom country Alsace-Lorraine, encouraged a group of Bismarck 's supporters in winter 1898 to build a Bismarck Tower in the city. That same year it was decided on a top of the hill of St. Quentin in Le Ban -Saint- Martin, west of the center to let the model design build Götterdämmerung by architect Wilhelm Kreis. The total cost of the Tower were 15,000 marks, which were applied for the benefit of Bismarcksäule through fundraising and lectures. The mason work was carried out by the company Haase and Schott from Metz. As a construction manager acted the Royal Baurat Herzfeld from Metz.

Architecture

The tower has a height of 13.5 meters. He stands on a terrace system. The tower base has a total height of 1.50 m. This was seen with oak leaves originally a relief of the Registrar.
