Bit Adini

Bit Adini was an Aramaic principality on the great bend of the upper Euphrates, the capital was Til Barsip ( Masuwari ). It was probably founded in the 10th century BC and had in the first half of the 9th century held the supremacy over Aram naharaim ( northern Syria ).

Between 877 and 866 BC Bit Adini is brought gifts under the then king of Ashur - nasir - Aḫuni apli II. In the 8th century that the local rulers to take the western parts of the territory of Carchemish. So Til Til -Bashir 857 and Barsip was taken 865.

Bit Adini was the Assyrian advance westward in the way. Assyria new capital Kalhu was settled by Ashur - nasir - apli II among others deported from Bit Adini.

His son Šulmanu - ašared III. ( ruled 858-824 ) struggled in his first year of reign as he pulled up to the " sea of the sunrise " (Mediterranean), against Bit Adini, Bit Agusi and Carchemish. In the second year of reign he besieged Til Barsip, but without success. The King Aḫuni fled beyond the Euphrates. In 3 - Šulmanu ašared Til Barsip could take, together with the forts and Pitru Mutkinu who had appropriated the Syrians. In year 4, including the Assyrian king marched against Aḫuni and took him prisoner and his family. Numerous inhabitants of Bit Adini were deported ( 22,000 according to the annals ), affiliated to the land of the province of Harran and Til Barsip renamed itself in Dūr - Šulmanu - ašared.

In the first half of the 8th century BC Schainschi - ilu is handed down as governor, who managed the western parts of Aram naharaim, including Bit Adini. The Torlöwen of the Northeast gate of redemption Barsip bear the name of Schainschi - ilu, with the titles tûrtan (second after the king ) and nagīru Rabu (top Herold ), administrator of the temple and Commander in Chief of the Army. He was also governor of Hatti, Guti and the entire country of Narmar. He also boasts of submission of Urartu. The name of the king appeared nowhere in the inscription, which is extremely unusual and indicates a period of weakness of the central government.

Schainschi - ilu was in the years 780 under Šulmanu - ašared IV, 770 under Ashur -dan III. and 752, under Ashur nirari V. Eponymenbeamter, so an excellent position had for at least for 29 years.
