Bit (money)

Bit (English " bit " ) was the name of smaller coins and monetary units, particularly in California, other western states of the USA and the West Indies. The longest held is the bit as the unit on the Bahamas island of Rum Cay.

At the so-called Indian border of the United States was the smallest coin of the Quarter, a silver coin of 1 /4 Dollar, but not but just two bits was quarterback there. So much included even the smallest amount to be paid.

From 1904 to 1917 bits were a monetary subunit in the Danish West Indies with the value of fifth - cents, hundredths of a franc or a five hundredths Danish West Indian Rigsdalers. The smallest coin had a value of 2 ½ bits or half a cent - to the only 1905 coin embossed were both value information given.

Since 2009 bit is also a term for the crypto currency Bitcoin.
