Bjørn Nørgaard

Bjørn Nørgaard ( born May 21, 1947 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish sculptor and performance artist.

Life and work

Nørgaard began his artistic career with a degree from the "School of Experimental Art " in Copenhagen, graduating in 1964. In the late 1960s he took part in various happenings, such as the kvindelige Kristus ( The Feminine Christ ) in 1966 and Hesteofringen ( The horse sacrifice ) in 1970. 1966 he participated alongside Henning Christiansen in the campaign " MANRESA " ( Hommage à Schmela ) by Joseph Beuys, which took place on 15 December in the gallery Schmela in Dusseldorf.

After Nørgaard experimented in the 1960s with graphics, ceramics and the production of films since the 1970s, he concentrated on sculpture. His exhibitions were held not only in Denmark and the Scandinavian countries, but also in Paris, Hamburg, New York, Sydney, Istanbul etc. The theme of his art is the transformation.

From 1985 to 1994 he was professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He is also the winner of the European Cross of Honour " Pro Arte " Pro Europe - European Cultural Foundation. A sculpture of Nørgaard is located in the Education Centre of the Federal Employment Service in Munster.
