The VEF is a professional Latvian basketball club from Riga. The name was taken from the same VEF manufacturer of radio equipment VEF ( valsts Elektrotehniskā Fabrika = State Electrotechnical Factory ). This company had founded the club in 1929. He is the oldest basketball club in Latvia.

History

During the Zuhehörigkeit the Soviet Union, the team competed in the Soviet Championship. VEF was the strongest Latvian basketball team over several decades. The greatest successes in this period were three times third place in the Soviet Cup in 1960, 1961 and 1991. After the disintegration of the USSR in 1992, the club was disbanded.

The founding was 2007. Already in 2009, reached the summit in the first division of the Baltic Basketball League. In the same season, the launch took place in European Euro Challenge. Just one year later, the company launched in ULEB Eurocup. In the same season VEF reached for the first time the finals of the BBL, but which has been lost to Zalgiris. 2011 was won for the first time, the Latvian championship. VEF repeated this success in 2012 and 2013.

Currently VEF plays next to the LKL in VTB and the ULEB Eurocup.
