Black lancer

The hump - spiked catfish or Black Humpback sting catfish ( Bagrichthys macracanthus ) is a freshwater fish from tropical Southeast Asia.

Features

Bagrichthys macracanthus has a uniform dark, blackish brown body coloration. There is a centrally extending brighter and narrow strip that starts behind the gill covers and extends to the approach of the tail fin on both sides of the body. The short and tall dorsal fin and paired fins are black brown. The rear half of the anal fin and the caudal fin are whitish and transparent. Genus is typical to almost reaching to the caudal fin of the dorsal fin, rounded dorsal fin; also she is black brown. The eyes are brightly colored. Four relatively short Bartel couples are also typical genus. The chin and lower jaw barbels are slightly fringed. Bagrichthys macracanthus reaches over 25 inches total length.

Distribution and ecology

Bagrichthys macracanthus is endemic to the Great Sunda Islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Reports on the continental deposits is based on confusion with other humpback catfish species. It inhabits large, muddy rivers and feeds mainly of small crustaceans, molluscs, other small bottom dwellers and rotting plant parts.

System

Bagrichthys macracanthus was by the Dutch naturalist and physician Pieter Bleeker in the genus Bagroides and, although some sections thereafter, described as Leiocassis macracanthus. The holotype comes from the catchment area of the rivers Lamatang and Enim on Ostsumatra; he is a poorly preserved specimen under catalog number 5216 in RMNH Naturalis - National stored Natuurhistorisch Museum, Leiden ( Netherlands). In the literature Bagrichthys macracanthus was repeatedly confused with other bagriden catfish species. This also led to disagreements about the actual distribution. Clarity only gave the description of Bagrichthys majusculus Ng 2002, the Bagrichthys macracanthus very similar, but in Indochina, is widespread in the catchment of the Mekong and Chao Phraya.

Relevance to humans

Bagrichthys macracanthus is a regular in the pet trade as a tomboy offered aquarium fish. The breed has not yet succeeded.
