Amstel

The Blauwbrug ( Dutch for Blue Bridge ) is a bridge over the river Amstel in Amsterdam. It combines the coming from the west Amstelstraat with the Waterlooplein. The third bridge already at this point owes its name to a predecessor, the wooden parts were painted with blue color.

History

The building was designed by the Dutch architect Willem Bastiaan de Greef and Springer in the style of eclecticism. It was modeled on the elaborate his bridges in Paris. The former city architects planned this and at the same time built bridge Hogesluis on behalf of the urban planning office Publieke works at the 1883 event, the International Colonial Exhibition. Half of the cost of building the Blauwbrug were taken over by the Amsterdam Omnibus Society.

In Yiddish is called the bridge Bloubrik. The building, which leads to the former Jewish neighborhood at Waterlooplein, is found in some Jewish proverbs.

The lanterns are decorated with the Austrian imperial crown.

While the throne passed to Queen Beatrix on April 30, 1980, came on the bridge to street fights between protesters and the mobile unit of the Dutch police. On this event in 1983 published novel is based The Battle of the Blue Bridge ( Dutch: De slag om de Blauwbrug ) by Adrianus Franciscus Theodorus van der Heijden.
