Blizzard of Ozz ( a pun on Blizzard, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Ozzy ), the debut album of the solo band of Ozzy Osbourne, which, however, appeared in the UK on 12 September 1980 in the United States until 27 March 1981.
Formation
After his departure from the band Black Sabbath in 1979 Osbourne decided to start a solo career. In the fall of 1979 he started together with guitarist Randy Rhoads (ex Quiet Riot ) with the songwriting. Early 1980, Osbourne signed a recording contract with Jet Records. After the band with bassist Bob Daisley (ex - Rainbow ) and drummer Lee Kerslake ( Uriah Heep ) was completed, the musicians went Studio on March 20, 1980 in the Ridge Farm in Dorking, England, to record the debut album. It was produced by Max Norman - after Osbourne had dismissed the first scheduled Chris Tsangarides -, the keyboard parts played Don Airey one. Both musically and lyrically oriented Osbourne at his former band Black Sabbath. He processed occult themes in his lyrics and the music was characterized by heavy guitar riffs and settled in the mid-tempo range.
On September 12, 1980, the album was released in the UK and on 27 March 1981 in the United States. As singles were "Mr. Crowley "and" Crazy Train " decoupled.
In 2002, the album was re-released, with the drum and bass tracks of the original by Mike Bordin and Robert Trujillo had been re-recorded. ( The same thing happened with Diary of a Madman. ) Reason for this was supposedly previous royalties disputes to Daisley, Kerslake and Osbourne. This new recording was partly heavily criticized.

The album reached number 7 of the top ten UK album charts in the U.S. Billboard 200, it was represented about two years and peaked at # 21 In the UK, the album was awarded silver for more than 60,000 units sold in the U.S. in 1997 quadruple platinum for more than four million units sold.
Reception
The album is considered a classic of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. The music magazine Rock Hard in 2007 it chose to place 57 of the 500 best albums of all time, Andreas sky stone contrasts particularly the unique guitar playing of Randy Rhoads forth. Steve Huey of Allmusic called the album a masterpiece, which forms the cornerstone of the 1980 Heavy Metals along with the debut album by Van Halen. Ozzy Osbourne show not only his sense of melody but also for excellent Begleitbands. Blizzard of Ozz Osbourne had made a star and set artistic standards in Heavy Metal. Ian Christe described the music of the album as a combination of the riff- oriented style of Black Sabbath with melodic, radiotauglichem sound. Although this was not the music, wanted to hear what former fans of Black Sabbath, but the music has opened up a new generation of young and open-minded listeners.
