Blue bottle (chemical reaction)

Under the Blue Bottle experiment is defined as a classic drama experiment in chemistry. In a closed vessel is a colorless liquid and some air. You shake the jar, then the liquid will turn blue. However, after a short time the color disappears. The longer you shake, the longer retained the coloration.

Chemically, this test is also used as a pilot for a redox system with NAD / NADH2 possible. In addition, the shaking time is proportional to the staining time ( 1st order reaction ).

Reaction

The reaction for decoloration based on reduction of a methylene blue solution for the leuco form of glucose is oxidized to gluconic acid.

When shaken, the leuco methylene blue, is oxidized by oxygen in air back to colored methylene blue.
