Blue Manakin
Blaubrustpipra ♂ ( Chiroxiphia caudata )
The Blaubrustpipra ( Chiroxiphia caudata ) is a South American passerine bird of the family of Manakin.
Features
The plumage of the male is mainly blue in color, with almost entirely black wings, black head, red crown and long blue tail feathers. The female is dull green colored, with darker edge of wing, lighter belly and olive-green throat and chest. The bird feeds on insects, berries and other small fruits.
Occurrence
The Blaubrustpipra lives in secondary and rain forests in Southeast Brazil, eastern Paraguay and northeastern Argentina.
Reproduction
Up to fifty males gather in a clearing and perform dances to make female attention. First, each bird selects its place in the low branches of the surrounding trees and waits until it is their turn. When mating dance each bird are several calls from and causes their wings whirring noise. The female chooses a partner and operates after mating nest building, incubating and raising the young alone. In a cup-shaped nest in branches above a body of water, two eggs are incubated in the rule.
