BMW X6

BMW X6 ( 2008-2012)

The BMW X6 (E71 ) is a cross between a sports utility vehicle and coupe the automaker BMW. BMW uses the term Sports Activity Coupé (SAC ).

The X6 Concept was unveiled at the IAA 2007 in Frankfurt am Main and went in spring 2008 series. While most of the BMW X6, as the X5 (E70 ) in the BMW plant in Spartanburg (USA) are manufactured, produced for Russia at Avtotor in Kaliningrad.

Technology

The marketed from May 2008 car features next to the led by BMW under the brand names xDrive four-wheel drive as standard with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC ). The xDrive distributes drive forces variably and continuously between the front and rear axle. The newly introduced by the manufacturer with the X6 DPC also ensures a continuously variable distribution of drive torques between left and right rear wheel. This increases driving stability, which should also result in curves on the road to improved handling as well as advantages in the field.

Features, which are also available in other BMW models:

  • Active Steering ( adjustment of the steering ratio to the speed )
  • Adaptive Drive ( active roll stabilization and automatic damper adjustment)
  • Adaptive Headlights ( better illumination of curves)
  • Head -up display ( projection of important information in the windshield )
  • Navigation system Professional with TV Function
  • Level control ( air suspension on the rear axle for more stability and comfort laden )
  • Reversing camera
  • Four -zone climate control

Since March 2010, an eight -speed automatic transmission is standard equipment in all models.

Interior

Engines

For the first time in the X6 a newly developed 4.4-liter V8 engine is offered, which features High Precision Injection ( direct gasoline injection of the second generation ) and the twin-turbo technology. A world novelty here is the arrangement of the two turbochargers between the two V8 cylinder banks.

2010 Twin Turbo engine in the xDrive35i was replaced by the N55 with a turbo ( twin-scroll ).

Through the use of Efficient Dynamics measures such as brake energy recovery, reduced rolling resistance tires and air damper control the X6 achieved with very powerful engines compared to other vehicles of this size less extreme values for fuel economy.

The following engines are available for the X6:

A greener, more fuel efficient hybrid version of the X6, which has already been presented in Frankfurt under the name of BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid, has been introduced in the fall of 2009. She is 13 mm longer than the normal X6 and also has a slightly different front.

The X6 M has a twin-turbo V8, which is the first turbocharged M engine. Basis for the M engine is the familiar 4.4-liter V8, which is also build in the xDrive50i. In addition, the X6 M is along with the X5 M, the first M model, which has the xDrive which, however, like the other electronic chassis systems underwent an M- specific customization for even more driving dynamics.

ActiveHybrid X6 (E72 )

The full hybrid version of the X6 came in April 2010 on the market. The vehicle has a built- in model X6 50i 4.4-liter V8 with twin turbocharger and an output of 300 kW ( 407 hp) at 5500-6400 rpm and a torque of 600 Nm at 1750-4500 rpm. Is supported, the engine of two integrated in the transmission housing electric motors with 67 or 63 kW ( 91 or 86 PS). The two electric motors provide 280 and 260 Nm of torque available that are practically available from the first turn. The maximum system power is 357 kW ( 485 hp) and the total torque 780 Nm. Energy storage is a nickel - metal - hydride battery pack is fitted under the boot floor, which has a usable capacity of 2.6 kWh and a separate water cooling circuit. By recuperation of the NiMH battery is recharged during braking or coasting. To this end, assume depending on driving conditions, either one or both electric motors acts as a generator. The so-called two-mode active transmission originates from a joint development agreement with Daimler AG and is a continuously variable automatic transmission, which can operate in two split-power operating modes: a mode specifically for starting and for low speeds, the other for driving at higher speeds. When starting work only one of the two electric motors, and up tempo 60 of the X6 on electric power. The maximum range in electric driving mode, the manufacturer of 2,5 km. If more power is requested, the second electric motor starts the internal combustion engine, and then added to act as a generator.

In contrast to the conventionally powered sister models are for the ActiveHybrid X6 neither DPC, Active Steering, Adaptive Drive available yet, which is mainly due to space and weight reasons. The vehicle weight increases because of the built hybrid components by about 250 kg on an empty weight of 2525 kg.

BMW X6 M

Facelift

In July 2012, the X6 has been revised. The visual enhancements are held in LED optics halo rims and tail lights as well as light modified front and rear aprons

A technical novelty, however, is the X6 M50d, which is a sports M version with a diesel engine. Its three -liter straight six- cylinder engine produces 280 kW ( 381 hp).

Callbacks

On 23 August 2011, the Federal Motor Transport Authority issued a recall of the models of the BMW 1 Series, 5 Series and 7 series, X3, X5 and X6 SUV. Affected are the model years 2008 and 2009. Reason is the fuel filter heater, overheat and can lead to a vehicle fire.

On August 21, 2013, was again a callback to the models in the 1, 5 and 7 - series and the two SUV X5 and X6. Affected are approximately 35,000 vehicles and onwards from May to November 2009. Reason for this is, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, a defect in the fuel filter heater for diesel models, which can lead to a vehicle fire.
