Boal (grape)

Boal Branco is a white grape variety. It is an indigenous grape in Portugal and their cultivation is recommended on the island of Madeira. Approved it is further in the regions Beira Litoral, Ribatejo and Oeste in the Azores. The main growing areas are located on Madeira, in the south of Portugal and on the islands of Pico, Ilha do Faial, São Jorge and Graciosa. In the 1990s, an area under vines of 4,014 hectares was charged.

The medium early to late maturing variety is especially used in a blend with the varieties Sercial, Malvasia Bianca and Verdelho in the different variants of the Madeira wine. Boal Branco produces a semi- sweet wine, but is also popular as a table grape. The wines are amazing too dark due to oxidative removal. Bual is very aromatic. The best Bual wines have a good balance between sweetness and acidity. The flavors in the wine rise with age, becoming more diverse: lemon, caramel, coffee, orange peel, apricot, dried fruit ...

The grape Boal Branco belongs to the large family of Boal - vines, which also includes the varieties Boal Barreiro, Boal Cachudo, Boal Espinho, Ratinho Boal Boal Boal Roxo and Vencedor belong.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. She is hairy white wool dyed crimson light. The yellowish young leaves are hairy and slightly woolly bronze mottled ( Anthocyanflecken ).
  • The large leaves are five-lobed and deeply sinuate ( see also the article sheet form). The petiole is closed lyre -shaped. The blade is serrated blunt. The teeth are medium in size compared to the varieties. The leaf surface (also called lamina ) is hardly bubbly.
  • The mostly cylindrical to conical grape is shouldered, medium size and moderately dichtbeerig. The slightly oval berries are medium in size and of a golden yellow color.

The grape Boal Branco matures about 30 days after Chasselas grape variety and is one of the varieties of the middle third maturation period ( see the section in the article vine ). Makes it one of the late-ripening varieties. It is a variety of the noble vine (Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphrodite flowers and is thus self- fruiting. When the wine-growing economic disadvantage is avoided, no return delivered to have male plants grow.

The grape Boal Branco is also known under the name Boal Boal Branco do Algarve, Boal de Madère, Boal na Madeira and Bual.
