Bob Bennett (politician)

Robert Foster " Bob" Bennett ( born September 18, 1933, Salt Lake City, Utah ) is an American politician ( Republican). He represented the state of Utah from 1993 to 2011 in the U.S. Senate.

Life

Bennett was born in 1933 in Salt Lake City. He is the son of Frances Marion Grant and the Senator Wallace F. Bennett. His grandfather Heber J. Grant was the seventh President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter -day Saints. Bennett studied for his schooling at the University of Utah in 1957 and achieved a bachelor's degree in political science. From 1957 to 1969 Bennett Kaplan was the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Army National Guard.

He worked from 1974 as a manager in the public relations work of Howard Hughes ' ​​Summa Corporation. From 1978 he was president of Osmond Communications, from 1979, Chairman of the American Computer Corporation and from 1981 to 1984 president of the Micro Sonic Corporation. From 1984 until his inauguration as U.S. Senator, he worked as CEO of Franklin Quest, a manufacturer of organizers.

Bennett is married to Joyce McKay since 1962 and has been with her ​​six children.

Political career

Bennett was elected in 1992 as the successor to Jake Garn, who did not compete again after four terms in the U.S. Senate. He was 1998 and 2004 respectively confirmed. During the 106th Congress, he was Deputy Whip of the then Republican majority faction, Mitch McConnell. After losing the majority of Republicans in the Senate in 2007, Bennett worked as a consultant for the now Ascended faction leader McConnell.

Bennett's Senate seat was in November 2010 as scheduled for re-election. However, he won himself in May 2010 on the Republican Utah in the election to determine two candidates who should compete against each other in a primary, only the third place. He retired in January 2011 from the Congress; and was succeeded by Mike Lee.

Positions

Bennett is a staunch opponent of abortion and voted against a law that benefits would also be made available to same-sex partners of federal employees. He has spoken out against the introduction of quotas for women and ethnic minorities.
