Bodoni

Bodoni is the name for a series of classical roman font, which go back to the Italian Giambattista Bodoni. It belongs alongside the writings of Didot and Walbaum of the most famous typefaces of classicism. The contrast between reason and hair strokes is particularly great here. The impression is sometimes described as an almost geometric.

Bodoni was inspired mainly by the work of John Baskerville. He also studied very carefully the writings of his French counterpart Pierre Simon Fournier and Firmin Didot, although he found his own style.

Digital versions of this font suffering - how many classical Roman lettering - often including that in smaller font sizes the serifs and hairlines are too thin that one could read them. At the same time the basic strokes are very bold in large font sizes, so have better digitization often vary greatly contrasted typefaces for different sizes, often referred to by the English term "optical sizes".
