Boekelo

Boekelo is a village of 2100 inhabitants in the municipality of Enschede in the Overijssel province of the Netherlands.

History

The village was known primarily for the production of salt, which was located in the south of the town since 1919. With the construction of Twentekanaalbrug the work and thus the headquarters of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Zoutindustrie, one of the predecessor companies of the Akzo Nobel was, however, moved to Hengelo. In the north- east of the village was in 1888 a bleaching, NV Boekelosche Stoomblekerij opened. The company was taken over in 1965 by Unilever and changed its name recently under the name Texoprint. In 2001 the plant was closed, since 2008 built on the former factory premises a development area, while retaining some of the old factory building.

In Boekelo is held annually the International Military Boekelo versatility, the 2012 is part of the newly formed Nations series in eventing. The most famous son of the village is the jazz drummer Hans Dekker.

In 1884 opened the " Geldersch - Overijsselsche Lokaalspoorweg - Maatschappij " a railway from Winterswijk about Boekelo to Hengelo. A year later, also link Boekelo to Enschede. The passenger was set to two routes in 1936 and 1937, the route to Hengelo was degraded by the German occupiers in 1942. In freight transport, the distance between Enschede and Haaksbergen remained until 1973, in operation since 1971, at the Museum with museum trains Buurtspoorweg. Since 1974, the museum traffic is limited to the stretch of Boekelo to Haaksbergen, as the route to Enschede was interrupted by the construction of the A35 motorway and then dismantled.
