Bombay High

The complex Mumbai High North is erected from 1976 merger of four interconnected oil platforms in the northern part of the oil field Mumbai High, also called Bombay High. It is located 160 km west of the coast of Mumbai.

The plant was destroyed on July 27, 2005, when the supply ship Samundra Suraksha bumped into one of the platforms, which caught fire. Starting point of the accident was that the injured ship's cook the Samundra Suraksha should be brought to the rig from the ship to provide medical care. There was not a helicopter transport due to the monsoon possible, the man should be pulled up with a basket on the platform. Because the crane on the leeward side was not working, it was only possible on the windward side to accept the man. However, the lifted by a wave ship damaged a gas line, the escaping gas ignited and the fire spread rapidly around. Because of the rescue facilities only a few were available, many of the workers had to jump into the sea. Squalls and high waves hampered the rescue operation. The rescue helicopter on the mainland could not start because of the storm. Planes dropped from lifejackets. 363 men were rescued within 16 hours. On the ship, six divers were rescued from the decompression chamber 36 hours later, which had been left behind when fleeing. In the accident 22 people were killed. The damaged oil island was lost and the ship sank four days later.

In subsequent years, the plant was started the rebuild.
