Bonnefantenmuseum

The Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht is a museum of ancient and contemporary art in the Netherlands. The museum is housed in the building known by Aldo Rossi.

History

The museum was founded in 1884 as a historical and archeological museum in the province of Limburg. In 1999, the archaeological collection was transferred to the municipality of Maastricht, since the museum works exclusively as an art museum. Throughout its existence, the museum has moved several times. It has its name Bonnefantenmuseum of the building where it was housed from 1951 to 1978. He is a corruption of Couvent des Bons Enfants ( "Monastery of good children "). This convent had made the education of children to the task in the 18th century.

Collection

The Bonnefantenmuseum contains a collection of ancient art with the departments of medieval sculpture (including the " collection Neutelings " ), Italian Painting ( 1325-1525 ) and paintings from the Southern Netherlands ( 16-17. Century).

Highlights of the collection of medieval sculpture are the wooden sculptures by Jan van Steffeswert and Master of Elsloo, such as wood, marble, ivory sculptures from Brussels, Antwerp, France, England and the Lower Rhine.

Andrea Vanni, Giovanni del Biondo, Domenico di Michelino and Sano di Pietro are the most important representatives of early Italian painting collection. The collection of south Netherlandish Painting ( partially borrow the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam) consists of paintings by, among others, Marinus van Reymerswaele, Roelant Savery, Pieter Coecke van Aelst, Pieter Aertsen, Pieter Brueghel the Younger, Peter Paul Rubens, Jacob Jordaens and David Teniers the Younger.

The contemporary art collection is young and internationally oriented. It consists of a so-called basic collection, in the artist of Minimalism and Arte Povera dominate. Important works of art by, among others, Sol LeWitt, Richard Serra, Robert Ryman, Robert Mangold, Bruce Nauman, Richard Deacon, Gilbert & George, Doig, Luciano Fabro, Mario Merz, Jannis Kounellis, Luc Tuymans, Joseph Beuys, Anselm Kiefer, Neo Rauch, Roman Signer, Hermann Nitsch, Arnulf Rainer and Franz West give the collection a solid foundation.
