Book of Lismore

Leabhar Mhic Cárthaigh Riabhaigh ( "The Book of Mac Cárthaigh Riabhach ", called "The Book of Lismore " ) is the name of a collection manuscript in Irish language, in the early 15th century in Lismore ( County Waterford) was compiled. It is according to the customer of the work, Fingin Mac Cárthaigh Riabhach († 1505), head of the MacCarthy clan, named. 1814 the parchment book in Lismore Castle of craftsmen was rediscovered. Almost 50 folios went soon after the discovery in textual study lost, but these sites are preserved as copies.

It should not ( "The Book of the Dean of Lismore " ) to be confused in the 16th century with the Scottish Leabhar Deathan Lios Moir.

Content

The book was from texts of the lost Book of Monasterboice (named after the monastery ruins Mainistir Bhuithe ) and compiled other manuscripts. The variety of content ranges from Lives of Irish saints, especially St. Patrick, Columba of Iona and Brigida of Kildare, about Acallam na Senórach ( " The conversation with the old man " ) and Airne Fingein ( " Began One Night Watch" ) to stories from the Finn cycle. An Irish translation of the book Il Milione by Marco Polo, Leabhar Ser Marco Polo, is also included.
