Boris Kalin

Boris Kalin (* June 24, 1905 in Solkan, † May 22 1975 in Ljubljana) was a Yugoslav sculptor Slovenian descent.

Biography

Boris Kalin left the technical school in Ljubljana and studied from 1924 to 1929 in Zagreb at the Academy of Fine Arts with the professors Rudolf Valdec, Frano Krsinic, Ivo Kredić and Ivan Mestrovic.

Between the years 1945 and 1970 taught Kalin modeling of sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana; there he was twice Dean. He trained a large number of young sculptors who were known throughout Europe. Kalin was one of the few sculptors, who was a trained stone sculptor masters. In 1953 he was elected a full member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

He died in Ljubljana. His younger brother Zdenko Kalin was also a well-known sculptor.

Work

Boris Kalin created mainly classically shaped representational portraits, public art and nudes.

For his work he was honored three times with the Great Prešeren Award: in 1947 for his statue Fifteen - year - old girl ( Petnajstletna ), which is said that it depicts his daughter, in 1948 for his portrait of Marshal Tito ( Portret Marsala Tita ) and 1950 for his Monument people's Liberation war ( Spomenik narodnoosvobodilni borbi ) in Vrhnika.

Some of his sculptures are in Brdo pri Kranju as a part of the prestigious collection of contemporary Slovenian art.
