Boris Vorontsov-Velyaminov

Boris Alexandrovich Vorontsov Weljaminow (Russian Борис Александрович Воронцов - Вельяминов, English spelling Vorontsov - Velyaminov or Vorontsov - Vel'yaminov; born February 14, 1904 in Jekaterinoslaw; † January 27, 1994 in Moscow) was a Soviet astronomer and astrophysicist.

Life and work

Regardless of Robert Julius Trumpler discovered Vorontsov Weljaminow the absorption of light by interstellar dust.

He compiled an atlas ( Atlas of interacting galaxies ) with over 800 unusual, mainly interacting galaxies, which are known as Vorontsov - Velyaminov galaxies and are denoted by VV and a catalog number.

Together with Vera Petrovna Archipowa he set a value based on the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey extensive morphological galaxy catalog ( Morphological Catalogue of Galaxies ) with about 30,000 objects together. He examined and classified and Planetary Nebulae.

Vorontsov Weljaminow is the author of a Russian astronomy textbook for secondary schools.
