Borough of Queenscliffe

Queenscliffe is located about 100 km south of the capital, Melbourne on the Bellarine Peninsula on the western side of the entrance from the sea in Port Phillip Bay and consists of the villages of Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff and Swan Iceland. The seat of the Borough Council is located in Queenscliff.

Queenscliffe is the last remaining administrative district with the name Borough in Victoria and could sit down at the last local government reform in 1994 against a merger with the City of Greater Geelong to fight back.

Prior to Point Lonsdale there are hazardous limestone cliffs and therefore there is a lighthouse since 1863. On May 12, 1863, the Borough was established. Lighthouses are also at Queenscliff. The former fishing village became the turn of the century into a tourist destination with several hotel buildings. Until the mid-20th century a fort guarded the entrance to Melbourne. For the military establishment also the only black lighthouse in Australia. Today, Fort Queenscliff is the largest and best preserved fort in Australia, home to the local military administration and is open to visitors. Fishing and tourism are still the mainstays of the region.
