Botho Strauß

Botho Strauss ( born December 2, 1944 in Naumburg ) is a German author and playwright. He is one of the most successful and most frequently performed contemporary playwrights on the German stage.

Life

Botho Strauss studied after attending school in Remscheid and in Bad Ems few semesters German literature, theater history and sociology in Cologne and Munich, studying, however, broke not finish off. Between 1967 and 1970 he was a journalist at the magazine Theater heute. Then he was on the stage at the Hall 's shores until 1975 dramaturge. He then established himself as a freelance writer.

His first works were well received by critics. So Marcel Reich-Ranicki wrote on 10 August 1977 in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: " For what he can already testament to talent. What he 's missing can be learned. This man is a great hope of our literature. Maybe will come of it, the novel of his generation. "

A controversial discussion has triggered the young man (1984 ) in the literature to be novel. In 1985 he published his first poem longer (75 pages): This memory of one who was just a day as a guest. It touches, caught in a variety of verse forms and poetic meters, all forms of social interaction of people. It is the attempt of a lyrical ego, to define its position again.

Besides plays Strauss has written short stories and books of essays and aphorisms. In it, he also argues with scientific and philosophical questions: questions of technology and evolution. So in Beginninglessness (1992). Since the late 1980s, he fell because of its democracy and civilization critical essays - especially intumescent goat song, published in 1993 in the mirror - under criticism. Phrases like, " that a nation wants to maintain his moral law against others and it is ready to bring blood sacrifice that we no longer understand and keep it in our liberal- libertarian selfishness is wrong and reprehensible ," were among other things criticized by Ignatz Bubis. Later Bubis relativized his criticism. The essay was taken from Heimo Schwilk and Ulrich Schacht as pulse and base to create the self-confident nation along with 25 other authors their programmatic anthology.

Praise and criticism in 2004 - published in the German and international press - on the occasion of his 60th birthday. In February 2006, Strauss published: the conflict ( in the mirror ). 2005/2006 was his newest piece The desecration premiered in Paris and Berlin. 2006 appears on its calendar 41 stories ( Mikado ) in Hanser Verlag. Five calendar stories are published with eight chalk drawings by Neo Rauch in publishing Kleinheinrich (Münster) in a limited edition ( 180 copies ) entitled The Mediator addition. 2007 his first short story: The Clumsy.

In his essay: The painter breaks the spell (Der Spiegel, 30/ 2008) he deals with the " painted over photos " by Gerhard Richter. Through the cooperation with Neo Rauch and the processing of " overpainted photos " by Gerhard Richter Strauss has based his work as a writer on contemporary painting. A sequel followed in 2009 in cooperation with Thomas Demand: For photographs of German history since 1945, issued by the visual artists in the New National Gallery in Berlin, provides Botho Strauss unpublished texts as captions.

In early April 2009 at the Bavarian State Theatre Strauss' new piece Lightweight game. Nine people a woman of Dieter Dorn premiered. These writes Gerhard Maier Stadel in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: "The great women world theater. Premieres of works by B. S. These are the feasts of the theater. The light- taker Dorn is the congenial director - partner of the playwright Strauss, who takes the hardest easy, because it does not solve it, but keeps in suspense ... "

His works are published in numerous languages.

He is a member of the PEN center of Germany.

Botho Strauss currently lives in Berlin and in the Uckermark.
