Botrivier

The place Botrivier located in the municipality Theewaterskloof, district Overberg, Western Cape Province in South Africa at a height of 94 meters above sea level at the foot of the Houw Hoek mountains. 2001, the city had 5505 inhabitants. The town of Hermanus is 30 kilometers and 27 kilometers from Caledon.

It is named after the river Botrivier. The Khoikhoi tribes that once grazed their cattle here, called the river Couga what can be translated as ' rich in fat "or" lots of butter ". The early European settlers then seized on the term. The river flows in a large lagoon and forms a marsh near its mouth, known as the Botrivier Lagoon. This wetland is home to thousands of waterfowl and a small herd of wild horses.

History

1731 Daniel Malan was the area allocated to Botterivier grazing. 1806 there was founded the farm Compagnes drift and has retained this name until today. Much of the modern village situated on the territory of former farm.
