Bouvier (grape)

Intersection of Muscat Pinot Blanc ×

Bouvier is a white grape variety which is grown mainly in Burgenland, Austria.

Origin and Distribution

The Bouvier grape variety has been bred by the same banker and landowner Clotar Bouvier on his estates in what is now Slovenia Herzogenberg ( Hercegovščak ) at Oberradkersburg. By selling the vine cuttings eventually spread in what was then Austria - Hungary. This also explains their distribution in Slovenia, Hungary and Slovakia, where it plays a very minor role in these countries. In Austria this vine covered with 243 hectares about 0.8 % of the total vineyard area. Small stocks are also known in Switzerland. (0.03 acres, as of 2007, source: Office fédéral de l'agriculture OFAG )

Properties

Bouvier requires deep, fertile soil and a good water supply. The vine has a good resistance to rot and frost. Therefore, it is suitable and botrytisbeständig also for cooler areas. However, it has a tendency to chlorosis ( Vergilbungskrankeit ) and fluctuating, rather low yields.

The grapes are precocious and already be read from the middle of August. The wines are characterized by a mild and low-acid taste, a light nutmeg flavor and a high extract content. The color of the wine is golden yellow. The grapes are for the Austrian specialty storm, a cloudy, partially fermented must ( see also Federweißer ), used or processed into new wines. With proper care, the grapes are also excellent for the production of sweet wines, for a high must weight is required. Quality wines from Bouvier generated mainly Lake Neusiedl. The grapes are also sold as a table grape. It is probably a natural hybrid of a Burgunderrebe ( Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris or Pinot Blanc ) with an unknown variety.
