Bovey Tracey

Bovey Tracey is a small town in the district of Teignbridge in the southwestern English county of Devon. The location of the nearly 7000 inhabitants town on the edge of Dartmoor induced the inhabitants, ( Gateway to the Moor ) to advertise on the city limits with the slogan "The Gateway to the Moor '. The local people call their city only " Bovey " ( " Buvvy " pronounced).

Bovey Tracey is twinned with Le Molay - Littre in Normandy (France).

History

Bovey Tracey is an old Saxon settlement and detected as " Boffa " in the year 500. The city received its second name from the " de Tracey ," a Norman Squire family who settled down here after the conquest of England by the Normans in 1066. A member of the family, William de Tracey, was involved in the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170. It is believed that William de Tracey was built as a penance for the murder of the parish church of St. Peter, St. Paul and St. Thomas of Canterbury. The church is still standing and has an uninterrupted series of vicars since 1258.

During the English Civil War, in 1646 members of the royalist troops at the local inn by members of Oliver Cromwell's Roundhead army were ( " Roundheads " the nickname given to the supporters of the Parliament army of Cromwell was ) attacked. If we may believe the tradition, the Royalists managed to escape by throwing coins to distract from the windows in the underpaid Roundhead troops. The next day a battle on the nearby Bovey Heath took place, which ended with a victory of Cromwell's army.

The name of Cromwell is still alive today in two ways in Bovey Tracey on. Firstly, there is the popular pub "The Cromwell Arms " and furthermore a nearby stone arch, which is referred to herein as " Cromwell's Arch " (incorrectly). In truth, these are the remains of a monastery, which was formerly at this location.

The train station of Bovey Tracey was opened on June 26, 1866 on the western edge of the city from the new " Moretonhampstead and South Devon Railway ". The passenger presented on 28 February 1959 its operation. Freight trains operated here until July 6, 1970.
