Branstree

The Branstree and Gatescarth pass

The Branstree is a 713 m high mountain in the Lake District, Cumbria, England. The Branstree located on the southwestern end of the Mardale valley and so overlooks the Haweswater reservoir.

Topography

The western end of the Mardale valley is surrounded by a chain of mountains. In the north of this chain begins with the High Raise then follow the High Street and Harter Fell in the west and finally Branstree and Selside Pike in the south.

The summit of Branstree is flat and covered with grass. Found east of the designated Branstree summit a second unnamed summit, which is sometimes referred to as a high Howes, Alfred Wainwright but imputing the Branstree On the Ordnance Survey map.

Southwest of Branstree is the Harter Fell. Between the two mountains lies the Gatescarth Pass, which is the Mardale valley a traditional pedestrian connection between the Longsleddale valley and is still used today as an ascent on Harter Fell and Branstree of hikers.

On the southern slopes of the western end of Branstree Mosedale valley the Mosedale Cottage is a shepherd's hut, which can serve as a guide in bad weather.

The Summit

The summit of Branstree is flat and with only 137 m Vertical separation provides only poor candidates for an excellent view. In the east, however, the Pennines can be recognized. A small cairn is located on the north side of the summit.

Rise

The climb to the Branstree can be done from the surrounding valleys. The Gatescarth Pass offers the possibility of the end of the streets in the Mardale valley and climb up the mountain in the valley Longsleddale. A climb that starts near the Mosedale Cottage is also possible as an on Mardale Common at Old Corpse Road from the edge of Haweswater reservoir.
