Break Dance

Break Dance (or breakdancing ) is a computer game for the Commodore 64, which was of Stephen Beck ( Beck- Tech) developed and published by American publisher Epyx 1984. The game is based on the currently popularized then dance form breakdancing.

Gameplay

This computer game draws on contemporary hip- hop music and breakdancing in the 1980s. The player controls a character who dances on the street in front of a city block. To funk music, the dance moves breakdance computer-controlled opponents must be mimicked by joystick movements. The game features three game modes: Hot Feet Dance Contest, Battle of the Rocket Crew and Dance Perfections puzzle.

In one of the game modes, the player has the movements of a single character to imitate what is increasingly difficult by constantly extended dance sequences. The Battle of the Rocket Crew mode, the player against a whole gang of opposing dancers. Initially, the ranks of the opponents are still dancing in sync, later they begin individual dance moves to perform, so the level of difficulty increases significantly. Another part of the game can create your own break-dance sequences from popular elements such as moonwalk, Turtle, Floor flip or Suicide the player.

In the cassette version can only take a player.

Background

The dance form Breakdance had previously acquired in the year with the film Flashdance and the same year with Beat Street worldwide recognition.

Later games like PaRappa the Rapper (1996 ) or Mad Maestro ( 2002) also tried to combine music and dance moves with game mechanics, but only Dance Dance Revolution achieved his great success by using a dance mat.

Criticism

The American game magazine Computer Gaming World called the game a product that "combines an extraordinary concept with exceptionally good gameplay ".

The British computer magazine called Practical Computing the graphics of the game "great" ( brilliant ).

Tim Onosko wrote in the journal Commodore Commodore Microcomputers that breakdance stands by the game mode in which players breakdance choreography can create freely.
