Brent Michael Davids

Brent Michael Davids ( born June 4, 1959 in Madison / Wisconsin) is an American composer of Indian origin. He is a member of the Stockbridge Indians ( Stockbridge Munsee Band of Mohican Indians, of Wisconsin ) from the tribe of the Mahican.

David studied composition at Northern Illinois University and Arizona State University. In his works he combines elements of Indian music with Western compositional technique, which he also uses traditional Indian musical instruments. You have been performed by ensembles such as the Kronos Quartet, the Miro Quartet, the Vokalensemnble Chanticleer, the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra. He has received, among others Prices of ASCAP, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Bush Foundation and the McKnight Foundation.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Kennedy Center in 1996 his play Canon Sunrise, commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra was performed. 1998 David was invited to film Robert Redford's Sundance Institute Lab, where he composed the music for Sherman Alexies Indian Killer. With Joe Myers in the same year he produced a CD with songs for quartz crystal flute and guitar under the title Joe & the Blue Butterfly.

In 2001, the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra David ' Powwow Symphony than forty minute Powwow ceremony with dancers and master of ceremonies. David turned on the performance of a television documentary. In 2002, he composed the music for Alexies film The Business of Fancydancing. With the librettist Marcie Rendon and the ensemble Zeitgeist David is working on the opera The Trial of Standing Bear.
