Bretislaus III, Duke of Bohemia

Heinrich Břetislavova III. (after the list of bishops of Prague: Heinrich ( Břetislavova ), Czech Jindřich Břetislav, † June 15, 1197 in Eger) was a bishop of Prague and 1193-1197 Duke of Bohemia.

Life

Henry's date of birth is not known. His father Henry was a brother of the King of Bohemia Vladislav II; his mother's name was Margaret. After studying in Paris, Henry returned to Bohemia, ordained and appointed provost of Vyšehrad. On March 25, 1182, the Prague cathedral chapter elected him to succeed the late Bishop Valentin Wolist. The episcopal ordination took place on 23 May of the year in Mainz.

A point of contention between the spiritual and the secular power in Bohemia was the disposal of the ecclesiastical goods. In 1187, Bishop Henry Břetislavova wore a complaint about Duke Frederick before the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Then the emperor appointed the Bishop of Prague to the imperial princes and certain that he was henceforth subject only to the Emperor. This also resulted in a separation between church and state Bohemian, as the bishop's goods no longer belonged to the territory of the Bohemian dukes. Status of the Prague bishop as a prince of the empire, however, did not take over the tenure Heinrich Břetislavs. His successor, Daniel II ( Milik ) was reinstated by the Bohemian duke.

After the death of Conrad III. Otto in 1191 was elected Duke Wenceslas II. However, his reign lasted only three months. Also the next Duke Otakar I Přemysl was in his first term reign only a short time ( 1192-1193 ). He was of Henry VI. discontinued and replaced by Heinrich Břetislavova. Through his double duties as Duke and Bishop Henry Břetislavova was the last Bohemian rulers who ruled both Bohemia and Moravia as well as on the Church property. Otakar I fled, but threatened his successor in the following years.

1194 Henry sent Břetislavova Bohemian soldiers to Meissen, which devastated the region. As penance, he promised the emperor to participate in the crusade of Henry VI. Since this had to be moved and only in 1197 was held, Heinrich Břetislavova could not participate due to illness it. In the same year visited with Peter of Capua, the first papal legate after more than a century Prague and found that Heinrich Břetislavova represented the interests of the Church very bad.

After Ottokar I. Prague had attacked his army was repulsed. Nevertheless, the sick Heinrich Břetislavova had her brought to Eger. He died a short time later. His body was buried in the church of the monastery Doksany next to his mother Margaret.
