The song tells the story of two Bäuerinnnen, Jeanette and Isabella, who want to milk their cows in a stable in Bethlehem and find the baby Jesus sleeping in the hay. The two women run to Bethlehem to announce the coming of Christ to the people and the inhabitants come with torches went to it to see for yourself.
