Bromethalin is a chemical compound selected from the group of the anilines.
Production and representation
Bromethalin can be obtained by a multi-stage reaction of toluene with chlorine, hydrofluoric acid, nitric acid, aniline, dimethyl sulfate and dibromoisocyanuric acid.
Properties
Bromethalin is a white odorless solid that is insoluble in water and decomposes under the action of UV light.
Use
Bromethalin was used as a rodenticide. It has been brought to the market in 1985. Bait containing bromethalin usually consist of cereals. After recording, it is converted in the liver largely to Desmethylbromethalin, which is considerably more toxic than the parent compound. This decouples the oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondria of cells, causing edema occur mainly in the brain and spinal cord.
In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, no plant protection products containing this active ingredient are allowed.
