Brunon Bendig

Brunon Bendig ( born October 6, 1938 in Chelmno, † September 15, 2006 in Gdańsk ) was a Polish boxer. He won at the Olympics in Rome in 1960 a bronze medal in the bantamweight and was Vice-European Champion in Berlin in 1965 at featherweight.

Career

Brunon Bendig began in 1955 at the sports club LZS Starogard with the boxes. His first coach was there Kazimierz Grzywarz. A little later he moved to MKS Wisla Tczew ( Dirschau ). Throughout his career, he still competed for Zawisza Bydgoszcz ( Bromberg ), Gedania Gdańsk (Danzig) and Polonia Gdańsk. He was supervised by the coaches Jozef Kruza, Kazimierczak, Rinke and Karnath, and came into the Polish national team, the boxer who he joined in 1959 by the hands of Feliks trunk, the large proportion of his successes. Brunon Bendig learned the trade of a locksmith and was initially employed by the Polish State Railways, before he joined the Polish army.

Brunon Bendig was at a size of 1.69 meters for the bantamweight ( up to 54 kg body weight), in which he launched a long time, an unusually slender boxer who lived primarily by its superb technology, while he lacked clout. Another advantage was its wide reach. In 1965 he moved to the Featherweight (up to 57 kg body weight) in order to avoid the constant rigors of detraining. 1959 denied Brunon Bendig his first international match for Poland and won it over Husein Useinovic from Yugoslavia on points. In 1960 he also took part for the first time at the Polish Championship. Here it underwent in the quarterfinals in bantamweight title against Stanislaw Dzienis a low blow, which made his disqualification necessary. Surprisingly, he was nonetheless nominated for the 1960 Olympics in Rome. Although he was internationally quite inexperienced, he convinced in Rome and won with point victories over John Sentongo, Uganda (5-0 ), John De Rooij, The Netherlands (5:0) and European champion Horst Rascher from the Federal Republic of Germany ( 3-2 ) and one defeat in the semi-final against Oleg Grigoryevich Grigoriev of the Soviet Union (1:4) a bronze medal.

In the Polish Championship in 1961 Brunon Bendig lost in the semifinals surprisingly against Teofil Kowalski. At the European Championship 1961, he was subsequently not used. He won the tournament in the bantamweight title at the 2nd championship of the railwaymen Railways of the Warsaw Pact countries in Magdeburg. In an international match against Hungary in Budapest he had against Gyula Török, accept the Olympic champion of Rome flyweight one point defeat.

In 1962 he won his first Polish champion bantamweight title with a points victory over Stanislaw Dzienis. He stood in 1962 in the Polish national team, who fought in Munich against the Federal Republic of Germany. He lost his battle here against European champions Manfred Homberg from Dusseldorf on points.

In 1963 he was re- Polish champion in the bantamweight title with a points victory in the final over Henryk Mielczewski. At the European Championships 1963 in Moscow, he was there again bantamweight. He was defeated there, but already in his first fight against Michailo Mitsew from Bulgaria, reaching only the 9th Place. But towards the end of 1963 he had a great success, as he defeated in the final battle of the 4th championship of the armies of the Warsaw Pact in Lodz Olympic champion Oleg Grigoryev from the USSR on points. In a meet against West Germany in Wrocław he beat Horst Rascher from Karlsruhe to points.

The third Polish champion bantamweight titles won Brunon Bendig 1964. He defeated it Henryk Mielczewski as early as 1963 by points. At the Olympic Games this year in Tokyo, he won his first fight on the good DDR Boxer Rainer Poser just on points (3:2 judge votes), before he lost already in the second round against the unknown Karimu Young from Nigeria with the same result, different and only came on the 9th Place.

1965 moved Brunon Bendig in the featherweight and won in this new weight class the fourth Polish championship. Again was his Endkampfgegner Henryk Mielczewski he auspunktete clear. At the European Championships 1965 in Berlin (East ), he then completed his last start at an international championship. He won there over Kenneth Israelsson from Sweden, Constantin Stanev from Romania and Wolfgang Hübner from the GDR and became the Olympic champion from 1964 Stanislaw Stepanovich Stepaschkin from the Soviet Union in the final over. Stepaschkin won this fight convincingly on points and Brunon Bendig won the European Championship silver medal.

In 1967 he started then the last time at a Polish championship, but retired featherweight already in the quarter- finals with one defeat against Jan Wada, reaching only the 5th Place.

After he finished his career boxers. Brunon Bendig was later large alcohol problems on the failed even his marriage. With the help of some friends from his boxers time he overcame this, however, and lived as a pensioner in Gdansk, until he died in 2006.
