Bryce Bayer

Bryce E. Bayer ( born August 15, 1929 in Portland, Maine, † November 13, 2012 in Bath, Maine) was an American physicist. He developed the Bayer matrix.

Life and work

Bayer attended Deering High School in Portland. In 1951 he finished his studies in physics at the University of Maine with a bachelor's degree. In 1960, he earned a Masters in Statistics ( Industrial statistics ) from the University of Rochester. He has worked in the development department at Eastman Kodak, where he developed in 1974, was named after him, and in 1976 patented a Bayer filter. The filter has enabled the development of image sensors for recording color information and thus the development of digital cameras.

For its development, Bayer was awarded the 2009 Progress Award from the Royal Photographic Society of Britain and 2012, the origination Camera and Imaging Medal of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.

Bayer was married to Joan Fitzgerald since 1954, the couple had two sons and a daughter.
