BSD licenses

BSD license is a group of licenses from the open source area. The archetype of the license is from the University of California, Berkeley, after which the acronym refers BSD: Berkeley Software Distribution.

Software under BSD license may be used freely. Permission is granted to copy, to modify and distribute. The only condition is that the copyright notice of the original program can not be removed. Thus, existing software is under a BSD license as a template for commercial ( teilproprietäre ) products, as is the case for example in " Junos ", the router operating system from Juniper Networks.

This licensing model differs from the GNU General Public License ( GPL) is that it does not contain copyleft: A programmer who modified a published under a BSD license program or library and then distributed binary is not obliged mitzuveröffentlichen the source code. If he does, then that must continue to be under the BSD license. It is particularly important also that he leaves adds the BSD license at the binary Publish eg the documentation and pasted directly from the source code.

License text

The original BSD license consisted of the following text:

Sublicensing

The BSD license granted, how many OSS licenses, not the right to sublicense. For this reason, each user gets his or her rights always directly from the holder of the copyright, and does not, as one might suspect from a distributor or a comparable person in the chain to the author of the code.

Advertising clause

The third paragraph is also called the "advertising clause" ( advertising clause ). It requires the software developers to call the name of the university or other contributors when applying their product. He is also incompatible with the GPL.

For published by the University of Berkeley programs, the third condition on 22 July 1999 has been repealed by William Hoskins of the UCB.

The original license is now called a " 4- clause BSD license " (4- clause BSD ) and " original BSD license" refers to the new license as a " 3-clause BSD " ( 3-clause BSD ) or "modified BSD license" this is compatible with the GNU GPL. A "2- clause BSD " (2- clause BSD ) is also common. It contains only the first two terms and is sometimes referred to as the "Simplified BSD License" or " FreeBSD license".
