Bucak (administrative unit)

A Bucak is the smallest administrative territorial unit, a part of the Central Administration of the Republic of Turkey.

The largest administrative units are provinces ( Turkish İl ). These are divided into counties ( Ilce or Kaymakamlık ). The counties usually consist Bucaks and a Bucak consists of villages and small towns ( kasaba ). Not all counties are divided into Bucaks.

Bucaks have, according to the central province of Administration, in human and organizational aspects today de facto no longer function. In recent years, numerous Bucaks have been raised to the rank of the district, reducing their numbers have steadily decreased. Officially, there were 2010 or 634 Bucaks.

Synonymous with today nahiye from the time of the Ottoman Empire used the administrative term.

Legal regulation

The Provincial Administration Act regulates the establishment, restructuring, naming, renaming, cancellation and distribution of Bucak. Is headed by a Director, a Bucak ( bucak müdürü ). This is subject to the Kaymakam, which in turn has the Provincial Governor ( Vali ) about yourself. The Müdür is the highest official in a Bucak and responsible for the general management and the publication and implementation of legislation. It is also responsible for public safety in Bucak. Police and gendarmerie are under his command. The Müdür is appointed by the provincial governor.
