His career as a baseball player began Showalter in college baseball at Mississippi State University where he was also honored as an All American. In the fifth round of the draft of 1977, he was hired by the New York Yankees and spent seven years in various minor league clubs of the Yankees. The jump in the Major League Baseball failed Showalter despite good performances, as not passed on his position of the first baseman in the Yankees legend Don Mattingly.

After the dismissal of Stump Merrill 1992 Showalter took over the office of the Manager at the Yankees. In the 1994 season, the Yankees had to strike the best balance of all MLB teams and Showalter was voted Manager of the Year in the American League. Disputes with Yankees owner George Steinbrenner led to separation in 1995, although the team had again achieved this year for the first time since 1981, the playoffs. The following year, the Yankees won the World Series under Joe Torre.

Two years before her league debut In 1998, the Arizona Diamondbacks Showalter under contract. Again, he worked for three years. Curiously, the Diamondbacks won just like the Yankees a year after Showalter's farewell to the World Series.

After a spell as a baseball analyst for ESPN Showalter signed on 11 October 2002 a contract with the Texas Rangers. These he led by a very weak team in the 2004 season to a playoff contender, which again earned him the title of Manager of the Year.
