Buddhist Society

The Buddhist Society (Buddhist Society) is a Buddhist organization based in London. It was founded in 1924 by Christmas Humphreys Lodge of the Theosophical Society Adyar ( Adyar -TG) and 1926 independent.

History

Creation and theosophical embossing

By 1920, Christmas Humphreys visited the College Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Because of his interest in Theosophy and Buddhism, he joined this time the Cambridge Lodge of the Theosophical Society Adyar in ( Adyar -TG), where he rose to become president of the lodge. In 1922, he met his future wife Aileen Faulkner know which shared the tendency to Theosophy and Buddhism with him. With some like-minded Humphreys and Faulkner called in April 1923, a study group within the Cambridge Lodge in life - for the common well in this subject. On November 19, 1924 it became its own theosophical lodge, the official Buddhist Lodge of the Theosophical Society (Buddhist Lodge of the Theosophical Society ), headquartered in London.

This Buddhist Lodge under the umbrella of Adyar -TG was conducted by Humphreys as president. The goal was:

  • To study the fundamental principles of Buddhism in the light of Theosophy, distribute and strive to live this.

The doctrine of Theosophy included both Buddhist thought also extracts a number of other Eastern religions and philosophies as well as parts of the Western Mystery Tradition. Humphreys Lodge was exclusively concerned with the Buddhist proportion of Theosophy and Buddhism as a whole and came so soon in conflict with the Theosophists, who had other preferences. Buddhist Society

Its activities cover the three main directions Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana and Zen.

Since autumn 1925, a bulletin was issued, from the spring of 1926 a journal called Buddhism in England and from 1943 The Middle Way. As the editor himself operated for a time, among other things Alan Watts.
