Firmware

The Special to the LinkStation is that the existing system can be replaced by a Linux with open source code lying under the GPL. About this way, for example, the distributions Debian or Gentoo Linux can be installed on the device with all its advantages. Thus, the device can be upgraded to a full-fledged Linux server and with a limited number of USB devices (such as printers, hard drives, sound and ISDN cards, etc.) are extended. Also interesting is the addition of the missing in the original firmware NFS support.
