Bugge Islands

The Islands Bugge ( Ruth Bugge Islands ) consist of three ice-covered islands in the Marguerite Bay off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. They are the front of the Wordie Ice Shelf and 7-20 kilometers north-west of Mount Guernsey.

Islands

The archipelago consists of three islands:

  • Ramirez Iceland or Isla Eleuterio Ramirez (69 ° 9 ' S, 68 ° 28' W 69.15 - 68.466666666667 ), northernmost island
  • Aldea Iceland or Isla Aldea (69 ° 13 ' S, 68 ° 30' W 69.216666666667 - 68.5 ), Middle Island
  • Landrum Iceland or Isla Latorre (69 ° 14 ' S, 68 ° 20' W 69.233333333333 68.333333333333 - ), southernmost island

The highest of the islands is 366 m high. There are several small islets and rocks on the northern, southeastern and südsüdwestlichen pages.

According to Finn Ronne Antarctic Research Ronnes report of the expedition from 1947 the islands are spread over a distance of just 10 kilometers to the northeast. The largest of the islands is about 2-3 kilometers long. The expedition found the islands of an approximately 30 -meter-high snow covered, on the banks of the rock was bare.

History

The islands were first discovered and photographed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition ( BGLE ) from the air. Later, they were roughly mapped from these aerial photographs. 1947, the island group was of the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition ( RARE ) under Ronne Finn from on board the ship " M / V Port of Beaumont, Texas " (formerly USS ATA 215) from sighted. Ronne named it after his niece Ruth Bugge, who had supplied the expedition with wool clothing from Norway.

Later that year, the islands were also studied by the first Chilean Antarctic Expedition.

Data from the years 1948-1958 that the front of the Wordie Ice Shelf had extended at that time to the Islands Bugge out. Since then, however, the ice shelf is shrunk.
