History

The origin of the village can be dated to the 12th century. Due to its central position between Groningen and Leeuwarden, it was often the scene of clashes.

In the 17th century it developed due to its position as an important stopping place for stagecoaches. With the arrival of the railway in the 19th century Buitenpost was an important transport hub. But gradually it lost its importance as a resting place by the opening of the rail link between Groningen and Leeuwarden 1866.

After 1955 the population of Buitenpost has grown rapidly due to the expansion of industry. Thus, the population was 1955 2.689 1975 5.639 2000 and 4049 already. However, population growth has slowed for some time. Tourism is an increasing importance due to the many biking and hiking trails.
