The Bukovské Hills within the Slovenské stredohorie ( Slovak highlands)

The Bukovské Hills (, Bukovec mountains ') are a mountainous area unit in the Slovak part of the Carpathian forests. They are named after the mountain range Bukovec.

Able boundary and subdivision

The mountain is located in the north-eastern Slovakia at the borders with Poland and Ukraine. Geomorphological it forms a unit with the Bieszczady on the Polish side. The term Bukovské Hills, however, is common only for the Slovak part of the mountain. After the geomorphological classification of Slovakia they belong to the unity of the Slovenské stredohorie ( Slovak highlands)

In general, the Bukovské Hills are part of the Polo Ninen and thus the - geomorphological not precisely defined - Carpathian Forest.

They are limited:

  • In the north from the Polish border and thus the Bieszczady,
  • To the east by the Ukrainian state border,
  • Predhorie the south by the foothills Beskydské,
  • The west by the mountains Laborecká Highlands ( part of the Low Beskids ).

The mountain is geomorphologically further divided into:

  • Bukovce Ruská kotlina
  • Runinská kotlina
  • Sedlická kotlina
  • Uličská kotlina

Character

The Bukovské Hills consist of flysch ( sand and shale ). From the main ridge - which lies on the border with Poland - Pull side ridges to the south. Characteristic are mountain meadows in the crest region, the so-called Polo Ninen, after which the entire mountain complex got its name.

The highest point of the mountain on Slovak territory is the south-western flank of the mountain Kremenec at an altitude of 1208 m nm The summit of this mountain ( 1221 m nm) thereof approximately 200 m to the northeast on the border between Poland and Ukraine.

From the rivers Ulička and Ublianka ( tributaries of the Usch ) and Cirocha ( tributary of the Laborec ) the area is drained to the south.

The region is predominantly forested; form is dominated by deciduous forests (mainly beech, sycamore ). Among the conifers, the white fir is worth mentioning.

Conservation

In 1997, the National Park Poloniny ( Národný park Poloniny ) was established, comprising large parts of the Bukovské Hills. It has an area of 298 km ² and a surrounding protective zone of 110 km ². At this turn, the landscape conservation area includes Eastern Carpathians at ( Chranena krajinná oblasť Východné Karpaty), so that practically the entire mountain is under protection.

In 2007, a total of ten areas in the Eastern Carpathians - four of which are located in Slovakia and six in Ukraine - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Three of these areas are located in the Bukovské Hills:

  • Havešová (171 ha)
  • Rožok (67 ha)
  • Stužica ( 761 ha)

Population

The Bukovské Hills are among the latest and least populated regions of Slovakia. Most of the residents belong to the minority of Ruthenians.

Attractions

The attractive landscaped, yet touristy little -developed area is suitable for hiking and bike tourism. Apart from the crest region and the beech forests are also several wooden churches worth seeing ( Topoľa, Ulicske Krivé, Rusky Potok, Kalná Roztoka, Jalova ).
