Bulcsú

Bulcsú († 955 in Regensburg ) was the driving force behind the Magyar military campaigns of the 954 / 955th

He united in his person the offices of Horca ( judge ) and Gyula ( supreme warlord ) and was the most powerful man next to Kende ( Grand Duke ) in the Magyar people.

After a truce with Byzantium Bulcsú was "invited" ( in Byzantine sources Botosudes ) by Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus Constantine by Opel. Presumably he was a hostage. There he was, let impressed by the splendor of the Orthodox Church, accepted the Christian faith and baptized 948. Back in Pannonia he was 952 but converted back to ancient pagan beliefs.

In the spring of 954 the Magyars invaded Bavaria and met no resistance as the German dukes were bound by the Liudolfinischen uprising. Duke Conrad the Red bought and Lotharingia freely through a large ransom and sent the Magyars against his enemies, particularly Archbishop Bruno of Cologne, the brother of Otto, who was loyal to the king. In the following year 955 Bulcsú was defeated at the Battle of Lechfeld by Otto I.. Together with the other leaders and Lehel Sûr he was executed in late summer 955 in Regensburg. In the wake of the devastating defeat of the title of Horca was not awarded again.
